Is the internet the green way to go? When you think about it: yes it might be the more environmentally friendly way of distributing media!
Imagine all of the paper that is used just to print out magazines and newspapers. If all of those media are placed on websites, we could use up unlimited amounts of pages without chopping down any trees. Of course electricity still produced pollution but it is much less impacting than chopping down a forest of trees just to print out media that will be read and thrown out after.
Another benefit that arises from placing media on the internet is that there would be less advertisements printed out and posted all over the city. This can also benefit the appeal of the city: wouldn’t you love to walk downtown without being bombarded by advertisement posters every block?
There is also a negative aspect that would be formed from placing media online (as opposed to offline). You could be bombarded by web advertisements and junk content all over the internet if this becomes the mainstream way of distributing media.
This method can not only be used by corporations but people in general could use the internet to their advantage to lower the usage of paper. There are simple little steps that could be done such as posting garage sales, small service offers and wanted ads through online classified websites instead of posting posters around the neighborhood.
